Woburn, MA, March 26, 2004 - SensAble Technologies, Inc.®, leading supplier of the broadest range of haptic devices and toolkits for haptic application development, announced today the immediate availability of the PHANTOM® Omni™ Developer Kit and volume pricing of PHANTOM Omni units for commercial deployment. Developers can now cost-effectively develop and deploy haptically-enabled applications.
The PHANTOM Omni Developer Kit includes the PHANTOM Omni device-the most cost-effective haptic device available today-and the new SensAble™ Haptic Device API (HDAPI) software. The HDAPI is the foundation layer of the SensAble 3D Touch™ SDK and enables haptic programmers to render forces directly, offers control over configuring the runtime behavior of the drivers, and provides convenient utility features and debugging aids. The HDAPI software includes source code examples to speed implementation. As part of the kit, developers receive Basic Developer HDAPI software support that includes access to the SensAble online Developer Support Center and forum. One year of hardware maintenance for the PHANTOM Omni device is also included in the kit.
"The mission of the SensAble Haptic Devices and Toolkits business is to haptically enable a wide range of applications", said Bob Steingart, VP Marketing at SensAble. "The new HDAPI enables developers to add haptics to their applications quickly; and, now with the PHANTOM Omni Developer Kit and volume pricing for the PHANTOM Omni device at less than $5,000/unit, developers can cost-effectively develop and deploy haptically-enabled applications."
Using the SensAble HDAPI and the PHANTOM Omni device, Reachin Technologies AB recently ported the Reachin API™ to the SensAble HDAPI in less than two weeks. "SensAble's HDAPI plugs into our API architecture perfectly, and has given us many advantages over the traditional, SensAble GHOST® SDK interface", said Per von Wowern, CEO for Reachin. "The HDAPI gives us much more power in controlling and monitoring the hardware. The new thread management features together with the PHANTOM Omni device have also dramatically improved performance of the Reachin API on single processor systems, enabling us to even deliver laptop solutions in the future. We are looking forward to marketing, together with SensAble, not only the Reachin API on top of SensAble's other product lines, but now also the new PHANTOM Omni and HDAPI, in order to broaden the base of customers, with the PHANTOM Omni's new affordable pricing."
The initial release of the PHANTOM Omni Developer Kit that includes the HDAPI for Windows® and the PHANTOM Omni device; and volume pricing for the PHANTOM Omni units for deployment will be available beginning March 31, 2004. Linux and MacOS X versions of the HDAPI are planned for later in 2004.
